THE SHUT OUT NEIGHBORS

Single – Seventy percent of African American children and 50 percent of Hispanic children are born to single mothers

High School Drop Out – More than 50% of Philadelphia students do not graduate from high school, and many that do are functional illiterates

Unemployed – Most available jobs require a high school diploma. Many of the unemployed are on welfare

Teenage Parent – 80% of teenage parents end up living in poverty.

THE LEFT BEHIND NEIGHBORS

Category 1 ( Will Be Left Behind ) –  4 year old Katie is in Head Start, does not know her colors, shapes, or letters. She does not know her name begins with the letter K.

Category 2 ( Is Being Left Behind ) –12 year old Kashon reads at a Kindergarten Level and 9th Grader Maria struggles with reading at a 4th grade level.

Category 3 ( Has Been Left Behind ) – 16 year old Kesha is a HS drop out and can barely read. 18 year old Franco is a HS graduate, but a functional illiterate. He cannot accurately fill out a job application.

Category 4 ( Left Behind And Incarcerated ) –21 year old Larry is a functional illiterate and incarcerated – 30 to 50 % of minorities in prison.
